San Mai Spear

  • Coal Iron Works 516 Meridian Street Anderson, IN, 46016 United States (map)

Join bladesmith Emilliano Carrillo for a lesson on forging a San Mai Spear!

Forge welded socketed spear head!

In this three day spear making class students will be forging their own san mai Viking spears using a combination of wrought iron and modern steel. We will create thin sockets made from wrought iron which will be folded around a conical mandrel and forge welded. We will weld together billets of high carbon steel and wrought iron which will be forged into the shape of our blades. The two pieces will then be joined in the forge and welded together to create the rough shape of our spears. We will cover the bevel forging and grinding of diamond cross section blades and students will finish the class with a hardened and tempered spear point ready to be mounted to a pole!

The cost of the class will include tuition, material fees, as well as bagels and coffee in the morning each day. Purchase of this in-person course will also grant you access to the live recording of the class when it is published on our Online Education page so that you have lifetime access to the process, information, and memories. Housing and transportation options are not available at this time and are the responsibility of the student. Local housing can be found at visitandersonmadisoncounty.com

Emilliano Carrillo

Emiliano began forging in 2014 at Hampshire College where he quickly became enamored with Viking Age pattern welding and Japanese swordsmithing. He primarily focused on historical pattern welding techniques and using artifacts to reverse engineer the forging techniques used on those pieces. Emiliano has had the opportunity to study many original artifacts in museums as well as private collections and this study strongly influences his work. He currently creates Japanese style pieces out of self smelted iron sand tamahagane and oroshigane as well as Viking spears, swords, and seaxes from the same period accurate materials.
