  • Coal Iron Works 516 Meridian Street Anderson, Indiana, 46016 United States (map)

** DATES HAVE BEEN CHANGED FOR THIS CLASS**

The correct dates are June 22-25

Join Benton Frisse with River City Forge & Tool for an intensive 4 day class learning how to forge two styles of axes and the tooling needed to forge them. This class is for the blacksmith looking to expand their tool forging knowledge and for the folks who want to start down the addictive path of handled tool making! Benton will teach drift forging, punching holes in steel, how to drift those holes to fit a handle, and how to forge, grind, heat treat, hang, and sharpen axe heads. Sign up now for an incredible AXE INTENSIVE experience!

Thursday, June 22: Day 1 will consist of some safety talk as well as getting you familiar with your cohorts and the space you’ll be working in. Afterwards, we’ll light the forges and spend the rest of the day talking and forging axe drifts. The drifts you’ll be forging for this class will fit up to a 3lb axe head.

Friday, June 23: Day 2 begins the axe forging! We’ll use this day to forge a small drifted camp axe- punching holes with the Coal Iron Works presses and drifting eyes with your own drift you’d forged the day before.

Saturday, June 24: Day 3 will be very similar to Day 2 - except you’ll be forging your second axe on a larger scale using the same techniques.

Sunday, June 25: The final day of the class will be full of grinding, heat treating, and hanging! Both axes forged throughout the week will be finished, handled, and ready to chop! You’ll be walking away with two beautiful hand forged and finished axes, a handmade axe drift, and the knowledge and skills to do it all again in your home shop.
